Two failed projects related to building out cement plants in the Midwest resulted in cost overruns exceeding $60 million which could not be recovered. In addition, the Company had significant litigation and change-order cost recoveries on foreign-based U.S. embassies, causing significant working capital shortfalls. Further, working capital management was impacted by disparate financial reporting systems across five independent operating units, complicating accurate prediction of expected cash flows and collection management.

Accomplishments

  • Served as Chief Restructuring Officer reporting to the board of directors, supplementing CEO who was suffering through cancer treatments. Responsible for managing cash and targeted downsizing activities, including managing negotiations with surety, secured lender, and insurance companies’ bondholder group.
  • Managed downsizing initiatives across five divisions and assisted with preparation of divisions for sale in conjunction and support investment banker efforts.
  • Concerted actions over the course of 18 months resulted in full recovery for bondholders, secured lender and minimized losses on bonded projects with offsets from litigation and change-order recoveries.

  • Served as Chief Restructuring Officer during an initial turnaround period to help lead business restructuring initiatives to reduce cost and liquidate selected inventory, identifying root causes affecting profitability, and assisting with accounts receivable collections and related process improvement.

Canada-based private equity firm acquired the grocery chain and installed a new interim CEO and chairman following the retirement of the founder. The stores had been operating independently and lacked standard practices across the chain. Profitability of overall operations deteriorated shortly after acquisition of store operations, as selected key employees were either terminated or left.

Accomplishments

  • Returned store operations to profitability within three months, and back to historical profitability levels within 12 months.

  • Conducted detailed operational assessment over store controls, procurement, staffing levels, inventory, warehousing, and transportation costs. Completed four-wall profit and product line analysis to prioritize actions needed to drive profitability.

  • Implemented controls across entire store network for store opening and closing, product buyers, store and headquarter product ordering, receiving, and inventory management. Implemented new product ordering and receiving practices to reduce excess and obsolete inventory, reduced vendor discrepancies causing charge-back and excessive adjustments, and significantly reduced cost of goods.
